LED Map lights don't fit!

My friend has a 2016 Civic and the LED lights we purchased are too tall for the map lights. The covers go on but you cannot push the cover to turn them on as there is no clearance. When looking at the housing, I noticed that where the light goes in there is a piece of plastic angled at 45° and it seems to be preventing the light from going any further into the socket. Has anyone experienced this? I was thinking about just shaving that plastic out but am looking to see what others have done.
